Psoriasis Vulgaris (or common Psoriasis) is a disease that comes with old age affecting the skin, joints and other accessory organs.
This disease affects about 1-2% of the population, most often during the age of 30’s regardless of gender. The causes of this disease are not very clear but rather could be a combination of many other causes. Some possible causes are hereditary, genetic structure, civilization factors, skin immune system disorders and excessive skin cell production.
Psoriasis can also affect other body areas and can spread rapidly or gradually – a disease that is chronic or recurring which can vary in severity, from minor localized patches to complete body coverage.

Psoriasis can also affect the scalp. Symptoms and indications are red scaly patches appearing on the skin caused by psoriasis plaques or lesions that could also affect the face and neck. Skin accumulates rapidly, with silvery-white appearances. It could either affect only certain portions or the entire scalp.
Irritation of the laminae can be in either of these 3 forms: wax drops phenomenon where small amounts of blood are visible, Auspitz’s sign where there is an appearance of punctuate bleeding spots when psoriasis scales are scraped off and the Koebner phenomenon where new psoriasis plaques can flare up at the site of injury, or old ones spread.
Psoriasis is not contagious and has many causes, it cannot be passed from person to person and we should not be afraid of having physical contact with affected areas.
Treatment for psoriasis is very complex. As a first step, reduce skin dryness accompanying the build-up of psoriasis plaques by means of salicylic acids, carbamide (urea), olive oil and other anti-fungal creams and ointments containing coal tar, cignolin, chyrasobin, etc. As an after treatment, use corticosteroids and lubricating creams. Also for the scalp, using hair tinctures, hair milk and other medical solutions will help in the recovery.
Another form of treatment is phototherapy with the aid of UVA and UVB radiation. Both types are effective even with the combination of other medical solutions such as tar, cignolin or psoralen (herbal medicines that balances the excessive growth of skin cells – antimitotic, antiproliferatives)
Similar to all other forms of treatment, climate therapy is also favourable and effective. The most common is living near the sea for some time.
It is a proven fact that this skin disease is also caused by stress, therefore it is highly recommended to simply free your mind from everyday stress and spend some time to relax.
Of course, it is highly recommended that a person suffering from this disease should consult with a dermatologist to determine the accurate degree of severity and also the appropriate medication and treatment.
For daily use, shampoos with a minimum 1% tar or salicylic acid is effective for continuous medication. It is also possible to use shampoos and conditioners with seawater salt.
